Strep what?

VIDEO BELOW - I couldn't resist his cuteness :-)

For those of you following… the A/C is off. We are at much more reasonable temperatures in the late 20's and it cools off at night. Normal, whew!

That was the weather, here’s the news.

Kamden has been complaining of an itch. His exact words are “I have an itch.” I should have taken video because you have to hear how cute it is and he's been saying it A LOT. Which is why I didn’t take much note of his complaint for oh, about the first two weeks and because he’s not in diapers anymore, well, I don’t see his butt. Which by the way, is where the itch was/is.

Then I finally took a look, and I quote one of my favourite blogs here, “down the barrel of his crack” and uh oh, what do I see? A rash on a kid who hasn’t worn diapers since sometime last October?

What the ….?!

I guess one should take note of the cute things he says and maybe, oh I don’t know, TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY.

Just a thought.

A quick call to the doctor and we are in to see him the next day. I was visiting with a friend that same day and we were discussing the issue. Of Kamden’s butt. Boy am I going to be paying for some expensive therapy when he reads this in the teen years…and she commented that maybe it was a tape worm…. Because a friend of hers had to check for that very same problem and the symptoms sounded similar….

AHHHH. I ran right home and got on the internet (gotta love Google) and did some research. No, thank the Lord, the symptoms were not right. I can’t tell you how relieved I was. Worms. I don’t need to say it but I will, GROSS times a million.

Next I call Mom, of course, and she says, no, not tape worms, pin worms. Great, back to the GROSS factor. She gives me some tips on detecting them because apparently the little parasites (and I mean that literally) come out to play at night. If you shine a flashlight on back end of your kid you might catch one of them carousing.

Then she asks if I will freak if I see a worm. Oh Mom, you know me so WELL.
And we also discuss the fact that they spread easily especially within a family unit… so I check the hind end of Jack and low and behold, same symptoms including the itch.

Fantastic. The worms are taking over. No worries. I can deal.

So despite the freak factor, armed with a flash light and tape I went in to check the butts a couple hours after bedtime. NO WORMS. So I also stuck a piece of tape in their shorts ‘cause apparently the little buggers will stick when they come out to play.

Morning arrived with no sign of any little slimy parasites.

BIG SIGH OF RELIEF.

Or did I just miss the signs… Still a little concerned, after all we are taking about worms.. in my kids.

The doctor took one look and said,

“Strep butt”

Jay and I both, with a bit of surprise, repeated it, as though it would make more sense if we heard it again and again. Nope, still not processing, heard of strep throat, not strep butt.

Alleluiah!

Some Penicillin and we are good to go.

One more time, all togther now,

Alleluiah!

Hi, you don't know me and as well I don't know you, but I found your blog while trying to find info on strep butt and pinworms. My daughter is being treated for strep butt as we speak, did you find that the two were linked together? I read somewhere that sterp butt can be caused by pinworm? trying to find out if I need to treat for pinworms too, dr didn't say anything aout it, but my other daughter is showing signes of pinworms. wondering if there is a link. what did you experiance?

Hi Angela,

I tried to comment on your blog and email you but it's not working. Hopefully you will come back and chech here. If you want more info from me don't hesitate to email me at kami.wer4.gmail.com.

Strep is a bacterial infection so I do doubt that pinworms and strep would be related but I am not a doctor. My kids both had it and it's very contagious so given that they share baths, they both had it. Neither has gotten pinworms since thank goodness.

If you suspect pinworms, I would try the things I note in the post to test for it. Also I would say you should take your other child(ren) to the doctor. Best to catch it early because it's quite uncomfortable.

I am a professional healthcare provider and I feel compelled to say that rectal streptococus (strep butt) in no laughing matter. It is a serious affliction, in the same league as corneal chlamydia (whore's eye) or vaginal lice (va-J-J vermin). You wouldn't be laughing if you had spinal extendus(monkey tail)or exopthalmos (bug eyes). Or what about choditis (crotch rot) and uterine prolapse (crotch purse).
These people deserve your compassion, not your ridicule.
