The origin of the GREAT Nanaimo Bar

Picture from here

It appears that there are those in the world who don't know the wondrous delight of sinking your teeth into the scrumptious Christmas time treat known as Nanaimo Bar.

This shocks me.

And I am so sad for you.

Really. You need to make it and then sit down and savour (yes, with a 'u'!) every crumb.

Apparently it hails from Canada, Nanaimo, BC to be exact. Here is the recipe (GET IT, MAKE IT). It also mentions something about "New York Slice". Whatever, if y'all want to mimic us Canadians go right ahead... but don't steal the name.

I kid, I kid! I have no idea where it came from but I have always called it Nanaimo Bar.

And don't fool yourself into believing that the bought stuff is just as good. As my family's self proclaimed Nanaimo tasting expert, I assure you, it's not EVEN close.

Oooooh, Kami I LOVE you for not forgetting to post this for us! This looks so good - I will have to try making a version of it. I say version because I'm not really sure about what vanilla custard powder is and wonder if I could use vanilla instant pudding mix in it's place or something else. Oh, I want one NOW! ;)

Wow! Who knew? They are even "Legendary". I'm shocked, just shocked that no one has told me about these before, there must be some mistake! :) Thanks so much for posting the recipe, Kami, seriously, they sound wonderful and look really yummy, too! The story of how that lady won the contest is so cool! I think I may just have to make some of these for Christmas!

I've been wondering about that! See, blogging makes me more worldly. Now I need to make some of those.

I really never knew about the origin of this sinfully delicious morsel, but my Mother was making them back in the 60's and got my family hooked on them, not to mention Pop!! Enjoy everyone!

These are a true Canadian treat! So much so that you American's can't even buy the key ingredient, custard powder, in the US!

Finally, after having my sister in the US ship me all the good stuff she can buy that I can't get here, she has to ask ME to ship her custard powder!! :)

cheers!
